The Lead: Unemployment Insurance Going Up

credit: istock

Do you know who pays for unemployment insurance? Employers. While the federal government argues about how much people out of work should get, we should keep in mind who will ultimately pay the tab because unemployment insurance is about to go through the roof.

During the 2007-2009 recession, the Wall Street Journal estimates that employers’ unemployment insurance costs went up by a staggering 73%! There is no reason to think this won’t happen again given that unemployment numbers have tripled and extra stimulus is still being doled out under President Trump’s executive action. The extra money will dry up this week but those on unemployment will still receive their regular amount. The costs passed down to employers will undoubtedly have a domino effect on employment and whether some businesses can stay open. Yelp has already reported that more than 70,000 businesses previously listed on their site were permanently closed by July.

Tech: Apple Sweetens the Deal

Apple announced a new lineup of iPads and Apple Watches on Tuesday and a subscription service for fitness classes that can be bundled with other Apple services such as Arcade, Music, iCloud, and News+.

The new iPad Air has a 10.9-inch display and a faster processing chip than its predecessors. It comes in all sorts of new colors and will go on sale later this month.

The new Apple Watch Series 6 has a blood oxygen sensor and a family mode that allows children to use the Apple Watch for connection with parents and family without the need for an iPhone. Apple also unveiled a more affordable Apple Watch SE, starting at $279, compared to $399 for the Series 6. New Watch bands were also unveiled.

Apple Fitness+ will have virtual exercise classes for iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV and work with all of the new Apple Watch body metrics. It will cost $9.99 per month, but it can be bundled with Apple’s other services such as Apple services such as Apple TV+, Arcade, Music, iCloud, and News for $29.99 per month per family. This is a bargain when compared to Peloton’s $39 per month price tag and shares of the fitness company dropped precipitously on this news. Peloton played it cool, though, saying on Twitter that the company welcomed some “friendly competition.”

The U.S. Gets a Bad Rap

credit: Giphy

The reputation of the United States is at an all-time low. According to a new Pew Research Center survey, 13 countries are reporting the lowest opinion of America ever tracked.

We can partly blame our COVID response or lack thereof. All nations surveyed believed the US has handled the pandemic the worst. These respondents gave their own country relatively high marks, saying that they think the pandemic was well handled where they lived, but only 15% said that the US did a good job.

How does he rank?

President Trump is also not a popular dude in international opinion. His approval ratings abroad are as low as President George W Bush’s ratings were at the end of his presidency. He also ranks much lower than his fellow world leaders Angela Merkel, Emmanuel Macron, Boris Johnson, and even Russia’s Vladimir Putin.

We should take this with a grain of salt given that 13,000 people were surveyed and indeed they don’t hold the final opinion of their respective nations, but, you know, no one wants to be unpopular.

News By The Numbers

4 hours. That is how long President Trump says he is willing to debate Vice President Biden in the first Presidential debate with no audience and hosted by podcaster Joe Rogan. That’s longer than the Oscars. Please no.

39,500 years. That is how old a bear is thought to be that was found in the Russian Arctic, perfectly preserved by the ice age with all of its hair and internal organs. Reindeer herders found it, and scientists are super excited about it.

$12 million. That is how much the family of Breonna Taylor will receive from the city of Louisville, Kentucky. Taylor was the Black woman who was killed in her home during a raid in her apartment. The settlement to her family will also require police reforms, but the offending officers have still not been charged with a crime and the family’s attorneys are pressing the state attorney general to do so.

Dry and Cracking

The West Coast may face severe drought in the next five years, according to the US Bureau of Reclamation. As if that region is not dealing with enough right now with raging fires and terrible air quality.

New models show that the Colorado River is only flowing at 55% compared to an average year, so the two reservoirs that store this water, Lake Powell and Lake Mead, could run dry by the year 2025.

Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, and Mexico draw upon this source for farming and residential living. These models are a warning for cities and farms to prepare for drought and begin conservation efforts now.
