The Lead: Impeachment

President Trump is still the President today. We’ve resorted to checking hour-by-hour.

On Monday, the U.S. State Department’s website listed the premature end of Trump’s Presidency, prompting hysteria and speculation that he would resign. The State Department says that was a mistake.

Vice President Pence has said that he will work with the President to serve the remaining days of his term, tamping down on speculation that he will evoke the 25th Amendment to remove the President from office.

Democrats have put the articles of impeachment into motion and expect a passing vote in the House on Wednesday.

As for the fallout for the Capitol riots:

  • At least 10 police officers are under investigation and two were suspended after the Capitol riots due to their “performance.”
  • An executive at the Republican Attorneys General Association has resigned because the association sent a robocall encouraging participation in the march.
  • Chad Wolf, the Acting Secretary of Homeland Security has resigned.
  • The New York State Bar Association has begun the process to disbar Rudy Giuliani for his role in the riots.
  • Lawmakers that were in lockdown during the riots together have started to test positive for Covid.

Pot Meet Kettle

Cuba is the enemy again. The Trump administration has designated Cuba as a state sponsor of terror. The move was announced by outgoing Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

“With this action, we will once again hold Cuba’s government accountable and send a clear message: the Castro regime must end its support for international terrorism and subversion of U.S. justice,” Pompeo said in a statement.

Kind of rich for Pompeo to lecture other countries about subversion of U.S. justice after that happened at the hands of domestic terrorists just days ago.

The Biden administration may not keep this designation in place. Recall that President Obama removed animosity between the U.S. and Cuba during his administration.

Hungry Hungry Hippos

In the 1980s, drug lord Pablo Escobar decided he wanted some pet hippos on his Colombian estate so he smuggled them across the ocean from Africa. Decades later, they have bred themselves into a big and dangerous problem.

A new study shows that the hippo population in Colombia will swell to 1,500 by 2040 and wreak environmental havoc in a habitat where they do not belong. Now locals are trying to prevent this by castrating them.

In Africa, hippo populations control themselves by getting into fights and hanging out in disease-infested waters. In Columbia, they have plenty of food and water and few predators so they are breeding like rabbits.

Despite the dangers and displacement, locals really like them. They have become a souvenir shop staple and are called the “town pet.” A pet that can kill you.

Grover-Approved Doggie Door

Check out this $3,000 smart doggie door that opens and closes when it detects your pup approaching. The myQ Pet Portal was announced as the Consumer Electronics Show this week.

The door also gives owners remote control of the door with their smartphones as well as a live video feed and two-way audio communication.

The door locks after one pet passes through it so your pup doesn’t bring in his friends and have a Pets-style party. It is activated with your pet’s collar so a mischievous raccoon or squirrel can’t take advantage of the motion sensor and make themselves at home.

The Divine Woman

Pope Francis made a change to Catholic law that will allow more women to serve as readers at liturgies, altar servers, and distributors of communion. We admit, we have not been to a Catholic Church in many moons but apparently this has been happening for some time.

Prior to this change in the Code of Canon Law, conservative bishops could prevent women from these privileges. The new law, Spiritus Domini, puts an end to that. This is in line with the Pope’s already-expanding role for women in the church. Last summer, he appointed six women to senior roles in the council that oversees Vatican finances.
