The Lead: Battle Over Ballots

credit: wsj

Supreme Court rulings have come in for voting procedures in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Wisconsin. At issue was whether or not ballots that were postmarked by Election Day could be counted up to three days after. Republicans had been challenging this allowance.

In Pennsylvania, the court rejected the first Republican appeal of the law last week and had been asked to fast track an appeal. The Justices said that they would not, so the ruling stands. Newcomer Justice Amy Coney Barrett did not participate in this decision after she had been asked to recuse herself by the Pennsylvania Board of Elections. It is unclear whether she purposely recused herself. A spokeswoman for the court said that she had not had time to review the case fully.

In North Carolina, the court rejected Republicans’ efforts to throw out ballots that arrived late but were postmarked on time. But in Wisconsin on Monday, this extension was struck down.

What’s next?

The conservative judges on the bench may rule again on the Pennsylvania law, just not in a speedy way. The state will set aside votes that come in after Election Day, and if the court overturns the ruling, they will toss them from the final count.

Honestly, it is just too late to rely on a mail-in ballot, given we can no longer have full faith in the postal service. If you haven’t mailed your ballot in by now, you’re going to have to drop it off or vote in person. What’s your plan?

No Longer Anonymous

You may recall the damning article published by an “anonymous senior White House official” in 2018 in the New York Times? That author has revealed himself to be Miles Taylor.

Taylor is a Republican who served in the Department of Homeland Security from 2017-2019 and now a very divisive figure. Some see his writings as a heroic act. Some see it as traitorous. Some have pointed out that Taylor had an integral role in the Muslim travel ban and separating children from their families at the Southern Border, and so the time to speak out was before any of those things happened.

T-Mobile wants to be your cable TV provider. The company has launched TVision and it goes live on Sunday.

You need a TVision Hub or an HDMI dongle. One of those devices can hook your TV up to live and on-demand programming from all the major networks at a much cheaper price than your typical cable provider.

The basic network TV package starts at $40. The popular cable channels such as NFL Network and The Golf Channel can be added for an additional $10 per month. The equipment costs about $50.

News By The Numbers

$10,000,000,000,000,000,000. That is how much asteroid 16 Psyche is thought to be worth because scientists believe it is made of iron and nickel and the size of Massachusetts. That is $10 quadrillion dollars, which is more than the entire global economy!

50,000. That is how many people in the UK may have undiagnosed cancer due to the Covid crisis. This came from a Cancer Support research group which looked into whether people were putting off cancer screenings during the pandemic.

50%. That is how much Microsoft Teams has grown since the pandemic, with up to 115 million daily active users.

$100,000. That is the minimum salary requirement to work from the Cayman Islands without a visa. The figure is higher if you bring a companion. This is part of the Global Citizen Concierge Program, inviting telecommuters to work from the islands where Covid infections have been fairly contained.

Why Don’t You Go Fly a Car!

flying sports car took its first test flight in Slovakia. Meet the AirCar. It can fly up to 1,500 feet in the air and then transform itself into a road car when it lands.

It is a two-seater that can fly up to 200 kilometers per hour and go for about 1,000 kilometers. It is made by a company called Klein Vision that says that they already have a buyer lined up.

“With AirCar you will arrive at your destination without the hassle of getting a ride to airport and passing through commercial security, you can drive your AirCar to the golf course, the office, the mall or your hotel and park it in a normal parking space,” said the company founder.

Can you imagine parking that in a mall and getting a door ding?

Drive-Thru Heart Attacks

Haunted Houses are not Covid-friendly. Well, actual haunted houses might be one of the best places to avoid Covid, but those Halloween Haunted Houses that are put on by teenagers with rubber knives? Those are not.

Some towns are doing a workaround by offering drive-thru fright fests. Actors pound at your windows and smear fake blood all over your car. But they wash it at the end of the tour.

Many have sold out every weekend this month, averaging 300 cars per night. They are not necessarily cheap thrills at $80 per car. Ghouls have union labor costs to pay too.
