The Lead: Gas Stimulus Checks

credit: afscme

Congress is trying to figure out a way to help Americans pay skyrocketing gas bills. Yet, Congress is still allowing the federal government to subsidize oil and gas companies.

According to the International Monetary Fund, oil and gas companies receive $11 million in subsidies every minute. Think about that for a second when you are told that paying higher prices at the pump is your patriotic duty.

President Biden is in Europe today helping the European Union make a plan to reduce dependency on Russian energy. One proposal includes using American oil instead. So wait? We have enough to sell abroad but not enough to fix price inflation domestically?

One group of lawmakers proposed an energy rebate of $100 per month while average gas prices exceed $4.00 per gallon. That means a tax rebate. Not money in your pocket. You’d still have to shell it out and wait for the rebate in April, meaning you would be issuing the government a no-interest loan of $100 per month.

In California, Governor Gavin Newsom proposed sending each car owner $400 to help pay for tax, although there is no guarantee this passes.

Lawmakers say that taxes on oil companies would help pay for these rebates, which does not make sense when one considers the subsidies mentioned above. It means that the American taxpayer helps the oil and gas companies, and then the oil and gas companies would turn around and pay some of that back to the American taxpayer. It sure does reek of political theater, doesn’t it?

A Seven Years War

Wednesday marked seven years of conflict in Yemen. Conflict is the nice word for it. Genocide is the more accurate word

Millions of people have been displaced by unspeakable violence. The United States and other nations have stepped up drone strikes in recent months. While the West says that it does not want to fight Russia in Ukraine, that is in fact happening in Yemen.

While President Obama was the first to authorize weapons sales to Yemen for this war, President Trump authorized 100 times more weapons sales for the fight and President Biden, who said he would de-escalate in Yemen, is now sending countless weapons to Yemen for free

The politics is awful and doesn’t even matter when you consider how it affects civilians. It is heartwarming how the world cares so much about Ukrainian refugees but why do they get to skip the line for refugee status and aid behind millions of people from Yemen, Syria and Ethiopia who were already in line? It’s a gut-wrenching question that is worth asking when you see Twitter handles with the Ukrainian flag.

Daylight Saving Has No "S" At The End

Sorry for that headline before we get into this story… but it had to be done.

In the United States, lawmakers will vote to end changing clocks in the spring and fall. This is great except sleep experts say that they chose the wrong time to make permanent.

In fact, daylight saving time is more harmful to human health than the permanent standard time, according to sleep physician Muhammad Adeel Rishi. He says that DST is like “permanent social jet lag” because it takes us off of the natural rhythm of the sun.

According to the Wall Street Journal, “Our internal circadian clocks are in nearly every cell in our body and influence everything from hormone levels to blood pressure. Disrupting this internal clock by even an hour can throw the balance off” and lead to more car accidents, medical errors, heart attacks, strokes, you name it.

Sleep experts are hoping that they can testify to Congress before this change is voted on.

Subliminal Beer Messaging

Would you let marketers advertise to you in your dreams? One woman claims that Coors paid her $1,000 to advertise to her in her dreams.

The woman responded to a Craigslist ad for “willing sleepers.” She and her boyfriend were amongst a group of people shown ads for Coors in dreamy locations and told that they could try to doze off while the ads played. Afterward, the participants were asked about their dreams and the woman said she did indeed dream about Coors. Something we can assume most people do not do.

Is this ethical? If she signed up for it, sure. But what about those of us who do not want Coors dreams? Are we concerned that marketers want into our subconscious so badly? I am. I want to communicate with the spirit realm in my dreams, not dream about watery beer.
