The Lead: The Endless Money For War

credit: getty

President Biden asked Congress on Thursday for $33 billion for Ukraine. That's more than twice the size of the last care package the U.S. sent worth $13.6 billion last month.

As Ukrainian President Zelensky said in his address to his nation, “this step is not cheap” but the U.S. shows no sign of closing its checkbook.

Where will all of this money go? Weapons and food, yes, but the White House also says that it will pay to send news teams to Ukraine in order to “counter Russian disinformation and propaganda” by sending “independent media to defend freedom of expression.”

How, I ask you, can media that is paid for by U.S. taxpayers be independent? And who exactly are these new government-funded journalists? Some questions to ponder over your coffee this morning.

Moderna Pushing For Emergency Use

credit: getty

Moderna is seeking emergency use authorization from the FDA for children under five years old and over 6 months old.

Why?

Dr. Fauci told PBS that the “pandemic phase” of Covid is over. So if that is the case, why can’t Moderna go through normal protocols to get to small children? Same question for Pfizer and AstraZeneca. Johnson & Johnson seems to have given up in this space.

The FDA will ask its independent advisers to weigh in on this request. No Covid vaccine has been authorized for children under 5 in the U.S. and the current Covid vaccines were not made to combat the Omicron variant, which is the dominant variant in the U.S.

Moderna said that its vaccine proved 51% effective at preventing symptoms of Covid under 2 and 37% effective at preventing symptoms in children from 2 to 5 years old.

Carl, it says here they're going to ban my menthols

credit: giphy

The FDA is proposing a ban on menthol-flavored cigarettes and all flavoring in cigars other than tobacco flavor.

Menthol is added to these products because otherwise they taste and smell terrible. Well, MORE terrible. The FDA says it wants to ban this in order to reduce “youth experimentation and addiction.”

The FDA says that it has “clear science and evidence” that establish the addictive nature of flavored products. It will seek public comment on the proposal for 60 days.

The European Union banned menthol in tobacco products in 2020.

Don't Judge A Dog By Its Breed

credit: getty

A new study shows that stereotypes about dog breeds, like stereotypes about people, are total dog poop.

You know what I’m talking about. All golden retrievers are lovable. (But have you ever met one that isn’t!?) All chihuahuas are yappy. (But have you ever met one that isn’t!?) All Dalmatians are aggressive. (I haven’t met many Dalmatians.)

Anyway, that’s nonsense. According to the study, physical traits are of course predicted by breed but personality is not.

“There is a huge amount of behavioral variation in every breed, and at the end of the day, every dog really is an individual,” the study’s co-author and University of Massachusetts geneticist Elinor Karlsson told the Associated Press
