The Lead: Stimulus Heads To The House

The $1.9 billion Covid relief package will head back to the House of Representatives tomorrow after it was approved by the Senate over the weekend.

Senate Democrats passed the bill on Saturday with no Republicans voting in favor. The Senate modified the bill by lowering the eligibility for $1,400 payments from people who made less than $100,000 per year to people who make less than $75,000 per year. They also lowered the additional weekly unemployment payments from $400 per week to $300 per week. These added benefits will now end in September, which is one month earlier than it was originally planned.

The vote in the House of Representatives is expected to be close but it should pass with all or most Democrats holding sway over Republicans, who are expected to remain in firm opposition.

Voting Rights Executive Action

President Biden issued an executive order on Sunday to expand voter rights and voting access. He did this on the 56th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, the violent day in 1965 when civil rights activists were beaten in Alabama.

Last week, the House of Representatives passed a voting rights act but it was not expected to pass the Senate. The President has taken at least some of that into his own hands with this executive order, directing federal agencies to expand access to voter registration information. He has also ordered a complete redo of the federal Vote.org website in order to give actual local voter information. In previous elections, private websites such as VoteSaveAmerica.com served this purpose where state-run websites failed.

The executive order also calls for federal employees to be given time off to vote or volunteer at polling sites.

One Fish, Two Fish

Over the last decade, the amount of plastic that fish are eating has more than doubled and continues to increase at a rate of 2% per year. This is according to a new study that analyzed 555 species of fish.

Scientists found that two-thirds of all species of fish had ingested plastic and the higher up the food chain, the more plastic they had injected. The smaller grazers and filter-feeders had consumed the least.

Of those studied, 210 of them were commercially fished meaning we eat them, and they eat plastic. Ergo, we eat plastic too.

News By The Numbers

81 years old. That is the age of a midnight snapper found off the coast of Australia. The fish is 20 years older than the previous record-holder for the oldest tropical fish.

560 feet. That is how tall the Clothespin Tower will be when it is completed in Dubai.

It is being called the world’s largest piece of art but it is also an actual skyscraper that will host 1,200 rooms, 300 apartments, and 40 floors.

$27 billion. That is how much Elon Musk’s net worth plummeted last week as Tesla stocks tumbled 11.5% in a massive sell-off.

What’s In A Name?

Former President Trump’s lawyers have asked that the Republican Party stop using his name to fundraise without his permission. Fair enough. He has worked hard to make himself a brand. He should benefit from it.

Lawyers issued a cease and desist letter to the RNC on Friday.

Republicans have been using Trump in fundraising requests. For instance, a recent email campaign created what they called an “Official President Trump Thank You Card” online, asking users to donate to this cause. Monies went towards the party, not to the former President, who – and this is just a guess – does not really want an online thank you card.

Venezuela’s Currency Collapse

What do you do when your currency is completely devalued and worth next to nothing? If you are Venezuela, you print 1,000,000 bills and you declare that your country will soon be the first all-digital currency economy.

In Venezuela, the bolivar bills are pretty much worthless. The central bank has had to circulate 200,000, 500,000 and 1,000,000 bills but even a 1 million note is worth about 53 cents in American money. The economy has all but imploded. Citizens are now turning to the American dollar for everyday transactions.

President Nicolas Maduro said that he plans to move to a fully digital economy by the end of the year to deal with the hyperinflation of his currency. We’ll see how that goes!
