A team of scientists is working to measure the deepest parts of each of the five oceans on the Five Deeps Expedition.

Currently, a place called the Challenger Deep is the lowest place on the Earth’s crust. It plunges 10,924 meters below the surface. These scientists are using updated technology to verify these places and provide better seafloor maps.

It is estimated that 80% of the seafloor is unmapped but there is an effort to compile a full-ocean depth map by the end of the decade led by the Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project.

This data is useful to assist in pipeline or cable planning, as well as ecological conservation efforts. The group has also been able to discover new wildlife patterns. For instance, they observed a jellyfish at 10,000 meters deep. No one knew that jellyfish could go to those depths but now we do!
