The city of Fort Lauderdale accepted a bid from Elon Musk’s company Boring Co to build an underground tunnel between the city and the beach.
Musk has been working on boring underground tunnels as a way to fight city traffic and car pollution for years. He sees this as an alternative to flying cars, which he thinks are too dangerous for urban populations. The first tunnel opened recently in Las Vegas. It is a Tesla-only one-way loop that passengers can ride between three stops. The Fort Lauderdale loop would also be for only Teslas and charge passengers between $5 and $8 per beach ride. Musk’s goal is to complete the project in six months for about $30 million.
