Pope Francis made a change to Catholic law that will allow more women to serve as readers at liturgies, altar servers, and distributors of communion. We admit, we have not been to a Catholic Church in many moons but apparently this has been happening for some time.
Prior to this change in the Code of Canon Law, conservative bishops could prevent women from these privileges. The new law, Spiritus Domini, puts an end to that. This is in line with the Pope’s already-expanding role for women in the church. Last summer, he appointed six women to senior roles in the council that oversees Vatican finances.
