The Great Melting

Brace yourself for another damning report on the climate crisis. This one comes from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the IPCC. Experts say it will be “the most worrying assessment yet of how rising temperatures affect every living thing.”

This report will not focus on cutting carbon emissions. Rather, it will focus on immediate threats and irreversible damage, such as the disintegration of the Greenland ice sheet and permafrost. These things affect all of us and the planet will try to cope with significant weather events that threaten human survival.

Is it time to panic? In my opinion, yes. We must wean ourselves off of single-use items, toxic chemicals and fossil fuels YESTERDAY. But that is hard to do when we can still buy them. The study’s author, Professor Hans-Otto Portner says this of making changes: “One key message has come out of previous reports – political will, in terms of climate action, is the bottleneck for a sustainable future.”
